Taking a break this evening...

Man, I have been busy lately. Last week I did "I Kicked a Girl" and that kicked ass on YouTube. That is where stuff needs to be doing well on, too. YouTube is now basically where the effort is being focused because like it or not, it's where the audience is. And as much as I am really doing this stuff because I think it's funny and not because I think an audience will think it's funny, if you do that you can find an audience IF there are people coming accross your stuff.

So very slowly, but surely, I'm building an audience on YouTube of people that pretty much think the same things are funny that I do. Which is a very good thing. Also, giving away free t-shirts every month helps that cause. If you want a free t-shirt, I pick ONE completely random subscriber on YT to get the shirt of their choice from the crap store. So subscribe if that is indeed something you'd like. Otherwise, just buy one.

But I'm taking a break today. Yesterday, we filmed pretty much all day. And the funny thing is that everything we filmed is going to be like 3-5 seconds long. I was dressed up like a whaler for one thing, and in another I fought a gorilla and a nun. It's going to be great. It's actually an entry for this Klondike Bar contest going on now for $100,000. I would kill for that money - I could buy a house. In fact, I could buy the house I like. I have one I want but need a lot more for a down payment.

So anyway, I'll be filming stuff tomorrow and editing the rest of the week. Then next week, I'll probably have a new video. Next Thursday I will be getting on a plane for Salt Lake City, Utah. Patrick and I are going to be doing some seriously funny stuff. I'm hoping to get the remainder of the year's worth of public humor on this trip. I'm going to be out there for 2 weeks, so I don't know how much you'll be hearing from me.

I will try to update Twitter (twitter.com/petercoffin) from out there, then I'll post a summary when I get home. I cannot wait!

George Carlin

You might have noticed I did not post an R.I.P. for George Carlin as I did with Tim Russert. I did that for two reasons: because I don't think a little picture that says R.I.P. is fitting for George Carlin - not to devalue Tim Russert or anything. Second reason is I really didn't want to be cashing in on a death meme.

Anyway, I've met George Carlin. About 3 years ago, I was fortunate enough to spend somewhere between 30-45 minutes speaking with him. I was in radio at the time and as such, when he rolled through town I was part of the morning show on the radio station that sponsored the event. So I got to help introduce him onstage, which was BEYOND wild.

But that thrill was nothing compared to speaking with him before the show. He was incredibly nice, as well. He told myself and the other two radio guys about how he used to be in radio and how certain parts of that were huge influences on who he is as a person. He also talked with us on current events, none of which I can remember because current events happen at a breakneck pace now thanks to the internet. It used to be "story of the week" and now it is "story of the... story of... story of the d..."

The thing that was so neat was that he didn't just talk at us. He conversed with us. It was something that I will never forget. That a total stranger - one widely known and a master of his art - took time to speak with a couple nobodies at length about whatever they wanted to talk about even though it would not be on record in any way is cool. Also, I will never forget the blood blister on his ear. Oh, did I try not to stare at it - to no avail.

Such is the tribute I can give to the man/comedian George Carlin was, though, that I thought a dude with a really disgusting thing on his ear was so fucking cool.

9 Tracks of Chinese Democracy

From time to time, I like to write about music here. I figure, if people give a crap about what I think about a ton of other stuff, they might want to hear what I think about the tunes.

So there are nine songs of the new Guns 'N Roses album on the internet if you know what a torrent is. If you are as obsessed with GNR or the idea that perfection is impossible but some tragic souls attempt it with all their might as me, you are going to have to get up off of that thang and download this.

Axl Rose obviously likes a lot of different music is about all I can say. I do as well. The difference between he and I is that he decided that he wanted to use all of it.

Here's what I think (songs are in no particular order):

Chinese Democracy - I heard this (along with a couple others) on a bootleg in 2001 or 02 and have heard several incarnations throughout the decade. It has developed from one of the more mediocre songs I've ever heard into just a damn rocking song. It's roots are in grunge, but it sounds like Powerman 5000 ate it, crapped it out and someone who could sing and write interesting and vague lyrics took over. I can see myself driving too fast because this song is on.

Better - A slower, really melodic hit. I like the chord structure, has that great bittersweetness that rock sometimes has, then it goes very heavy for some soloing - the kind you might expect from a GNR song. Catchy as all hell. Robin Finck (on loan from NIN)'s solo toward the end almost out-Slashes Slash.

There Was a Time - One I'd heard in bootlegs and demos, again has really developed over the years into a damn good song. I hear Russia in this song for some reason. I think this was Axl Rose getting over someone. Just seems like venting - but that's what a ton of music is. And this works out very well, I get into it and enjoy it.

I.R.S. - I mean this in the best possible way, this song sounds like the montage song in Axl's life story movie. Like "I AM AXL ROSE!" Blazing guitar solo by either Ron Thal or Buckethead - couldn't tell you which one. Rock and roll, etc.

Madagascar - Sounds like a track off Use Your Illusion but good. I seriously hated the majority of the Illusion shit. It was all half-assed like some people wanted to do it and some didn't. This wasn't - this was made by someone who really wanted to smack you with some epic crap. I hear Russia in this one, too (I think Axl Rose is fascinated by Russia more than China, but Russian Democracy just doesn't sound as ironic or catchy). Sounds like it could be used in a James Bond movie, though. Which is NEVER a bad thing.

The Blues - Don't ask me how, but this sounds like a Tenacious D song. It's a good song, not one I would listen to non-stop, but in with the other ones it's damn good. Robin Finck is Slash's real replacement. If NIN takes him forever Axl is screwed because he can play with the emotion that Slash does but is as artsy-fartsy as Axl is. I hope Axl and Trent Reznor can share him.

Rihad & the Bendouins - This song pounds you in the face like a rock song should. And it is a rock song - if Led Zeppelin had Axl as a singer-type rock, even. This is proof that to be a good rock and roll band, you don't need to plagerize AC/DC like that shitty Airborne band or write the heaviest thing possible like whatever Pantera changed their name to when Dimebag Darrell died. Or those stupid hardcore emo combo bands you hear. You can come up with new ideas but keep roll around (it goes well with rock).

Some Unnamed Song - This one kind of lost me. I mean it's decent, but parts of it make me think Linkin Park which makes me not want to listen to it. Partially adult contemporary, too. The longer you listen to it, the better it gets, though. The last couple minutes make up for the first. I am a fan of Axl's willingness to make songs that build, but I don't know for certain if he succeeded with this one. It doesn't suck, but is literally the only song of the bunch that I think, "eh, I could do without it on a new GNR album."

If The World (Would End Today) - The best Apocalyptic fuck song I have ever heard. People will have sex with this song on when the world ends.

MAILBAG: Beer Shirts

FROM: Jeff, Indiana
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:I was trying to find The Act of Drinking T-shirt and was wondering ifyou knew where I could buy one???  Totally need this t-shirt...pleasehelp!  Thanks

RESPONSE: Jeff, let me tell you this. There are only a few t-shirts you NEED and a typical frat-boy party beer nonsense shirt is hardly one of them.

Now, a shirt making fun of Scientology... that might be a good one. Especially one featuring artwork from my cartoon, "Smilentology."
http://www.cafepress.com/smilentology

Or perhaps you are more into physical activity, and might want a POWER WALKING t-shirt to display that when you walk, the strength of a generation flows fourth.
http://www.cafepress.com/realpowerwalkin

Or maybe, you are one of the people who thinks that the world is going to end in 2012 and likes Steve-O.
http://www.cafepress.com/2012fourthdimen

No matter which of those you go with, you know you will have made a good choice - and will stand out in the sea of "IT'S BEER THIRTY!" shirts out there.

Lazy?

You may have been noticing a lack of videos for a while now. Probably would be a good idea to let you in as to why, as the point of this site is to make lots of silly videos.

Over the past couple weeks, I have been burnt out. Not really from making videos (that's kind of what keeps me sane), but on a lot of stuff. I work many hours at my real job, the one that is full-time and pays me decent money. I look at this as a second job and as a hobby, too. I hope one day it's just the main job and I think that will happen with time and effort, but for now it has to play second-fiddle as far as how much time I spend on it.

But the main job has really been draining me lately. It is the same thing pretty much every day without much to show but a paycheck. I'm living at home still, because I intend to buy my next house and that takes money. And renting just eats money, so I am not doing that.

Also, my personal life is interesting. I don't know how deep I should go into that on the Internet anymore. It's kind of weird knowing a lot of people will eventually see what you write. And back in the day when it was a few people on here, I got pretty personal. I would talk a lot about what I felt and who I cared about. Now I don't really know that's a wise thing to do.

The brain has just not been concentrating lately. I am working on stuff, though, and it's funny. One cartoon I am going to be working on on-and-off for a while, as it is a re-creation of the Ninja Turtles theme. I also started something today that should be done in the next day or so called "Year-Old Chocolate." Other stuff that will be coming soon is a Klondyke Bar commercial contest entry and possibly some other things. Next month, I'm going to Utah, and that is probably going to be a big source of footage. I hope so anyway.

Looks like no new video today...

I know I promised a new video by today, but it kind of looks like this beast won't be out until later in the week. Why? I have underestimated how difficult re-creating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon intro would be. Turns out things that move a lot take forever to make.

I think we're going to go through another equipment upgrade here, too. The camera I have is pretty awesome, but I don't think it QUITE lives up to what I need to do everything I want to do. I am hoping the Utah trip is going to yield a lot of public sillyness.

I'm retarded. Anyway, a YouTube subscriber was randomly picked today and messaged. They have until June 15th to reply with what shirt they want and their address for me to send it to.

Vlogs Suck

SxePhil is claiming to be quitting YouTube. I don't watch SxePhil. I do know he knows what the hell he is doing, as he is constantly at the top of the charts (as referenced in my Pork & Beans parody http://youtube.com/watch?v=RV-nrUHtlfc), but I will say I absolutely cannot watch video blogs.

Someone just sitting there talking without the pressure of an audience that is not automatically sold on them bores me to tears. The only thing that could get me to watch that is the view (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG6LHC4mL_8). And even then I have a hard time stomaching someone talking about their life and other YouTube channels, etc. It's like Garfield - nothing ever happens. Oh, that cat!

I love watching independent productions. Comedy, drama, anything. I love seeing regular people without budgets making stuff that entertains because it's entertainment. Actually trying, I guess.

And I realize sometimes these vlogs are part of some type of grand entertainment scheme, like LonelyGirl. But that sucked too. Vlogs suck crap. Don't ever make a vlog unless you have C-to-D sized boobs. And are a woman. And your C-to-D sized boobs take up the majority of your body weight. My ex would have made a good vlogger. Except if I had known her as a vlogger, I could have turned her volume down. Because usually vlog talk is BORING AND STUPID.

Cause/Effect (NOT FUNNY WARNING)

Well, today I think I have learned that anyone can have an effect on the world. I think I partially caused Steve-O from Jackass to do something. See, I made a video a few months back about his newfound spirituality (read: annoying preachy-ness). We all know who Steve-O is and what he has always done. He's a funny man and will do absolutely anything to get a laugh. And that is why I respect him.

But lately, he'd been posting stuff on his blog that didn't even attempt to be funny (reminds me of this post). Instead it was stuff about the Age of Aquarius and how the world is going to end soon so everyone better shape up. Hell, it could be true. I don't know.

I come from the line of thinking where we cannot know that kind of stuff. We can't know if there is a "god" and if there is we cannot know what it is. We can make theories and do that like a bunch of crazies sometimes, but there is no way to truly know. Which is why I don't really partake in that stuff. It's all human-created speculation. The Bible has been translated countless times, and it only takes one translator that doesn't agree with something to change it.

I don't disbelieve in anything. I believe it is all possible - but I refuse to live life for something I don't know for sure is there. I don't want to be a good person to get into heaven or avoid hell. I want to be uncertain. I get a certain peace from it.

Basically his recent postings have been the opposite of that - he seems to think he knows the world is going to end in 2012 among other things. Then, yesterday, he posted my cartoon. Said cartoon basically really went after his new preachy-ness. He called it his new favorite cartoon, then today removed it. He went on to apologize for being disrespectful to other people's spiritual understanding.

I don't know that I would call what he was doing that, though. I don't think he was ever being disrespectful. Just really preachy. I don't care what you believe just like you shouldn't care what I believe.

Regardless, I am a big fan of Steve-O. He is sober now, and damn if that isn't a good thing. I can't wait to see what he comes up with with a sharp mind. And if I had some kind of effect on him, I am actually honored. I don't want him to change what he believes, though. This is the USA, I can disagree with anyone. But fuck, this is Steve-O. I didn't mean to make the man feel guilty or something. I hope I didn't, really.
